what's all about kadaknath?

Kadaknath, kalamasi, black meat chicken, karungkozhi, karuppu kozhi, black chicken whatever they are called in different parts in India, Their main importance lie in their meat quality inside. 

"It doesnt matter what Its lies Outside, Its whats Inside  that counts" :-)

How did this Holy chicken!!! got its black meat, lies scientifically in its gene causing Fibromelonisis. Its gene evolved over a lot of years back may be, produces melanin pigment. This melanin pigment enters its blood vessels, tissues, cartilage, bones sometimes, comb, leg scales except eggs. 

In Tamil Siddha text there are a lot of attributions stating that Black Chicken can cure paralysis, skin diseases, to give stamina to lean persons, insect bites and there are many more disease... I have a lot of such texts with me collected over a period of time by my own interest in Kadaknath.

How it is different from other country fowls? ......

Kadaknath is totally black outside and inside out with major four variations. Totally black plumage, penciled plumage, golden plumage, maximum white plumage.

The meat tastes better than a ordinary country chicken. Its bones are very hard. Imagine eating a mutton. Eggs are very tasty and yummy. The egg shell is harder and with orange yolk. 

Remember Kadaknath is also a country chicken type only. And its truly Indian!!! There are more than 22 breeds of country chicken inside India. 

The eggs are brown to light brown shelled and kadaknath chicks hatch out at 21 days only. Eggs are laid in clutches of 10-15 and the kadaknath mother is a very bad brooder hen. She has other jobs to attend to!!! May be! I use Incubators and ordinary country chickens to brood over the eggs. Normally these Chicka boys are very tiny than a broiler chick and are very beautiful that you can kiss them all day. So irresistible that we stay with the chicks for a very long time inside the farm itself.  

The Kadaknath Cocks are similar to a shallow size country chicken. They reach 1.05 kg around 6 months and Kadaknath Hens reach 1 kg in  6 months. Feed Conversion Ratio is around 2.5 that is it takes 2.5 kg feed to gain 1 kg meat.

They consume same feed like ordinary chicken. Although we follow a very special diet evolved over years and equipped with our experience to get quality eggs. It was a trial and error method. The chicks now have high livability due to this special diet. 

Kadaknath eggs Hatchability is around 50% to 85% sometimes if hatched with Incubator. With broody hen we get 10-12 chicks out of 13 eggs.

Do you think Chicken feed is a BIG Science?

I too was baffled in my initial days of Chicken rearing. I started reading Scott book, It was tougher than my college book. Truth about Chicken feed is Chickens know what they want! We need not feed them If you let these guys out.

Normally, Kadaknath Chicken feed can be made by ourself by giving maize crumbs in the first seven days and then by feeding broiler pre-starter feed with less fish meal for some one or two month and then you can feed broiler starter feed, Vegetable market waste, Azolla( I shall teach you about Azolla culture in a separate post), Spinach, Grass etc., After two months give Kadaknath Chicken can be fed with 20% protein diet.

Let your chickens out and let them play and fight. Let the Kadaknath Chicks eat a variety. I am striving towards Organic Kadaknath Chicken. Soon I shall be able to give you Organic Kadaknath Chicken Feed production techniques.

How to Vaccinate Kadaknath Chickens

Chickens get hundreds of diseases just like humans and any other living beings. Kadaknath is also a Chicken breed. As far as I have seen in two years of Kadaknath rearing, I have only seen common Coccidiosis infection due to high humidity inside my farm in the early days. I shall post separately how to raise Kadaknath chickens cheaply, healthy and safe at the lowest cost possible. 

I have done only the following vaccinations to my flock and nothing else. The mortality of my farm birds is less than 0.5% The Three main vaccinations which I do are:

1. F1 vaccine in the first week end (costs <Rs.100 for five hundred birds)
2. IBD vaccine in the second week end (costs <Rs.200 for five hundred birds)
3. RD vaccine in the sixth month 

How to Administer the Vaccine?

   When you buy the Vaccine, get a polythene cover of Ice. Transport the two sealed glass vials of vaccine materials in the ice covered cover. Also buy a syringe with needle. Go to home. Pierce the sealed liquid content. Suck it the with syringe and then open the other glass veil with solid or crystal content(killed germs). Then pour the liquid into it. Shake the content. Then give one or two drops of vaccine to all chicks through eye or mouth without the needle. Please see that the syringe has its needle removed. Do not harm the chicks in anyway.  There is a duct or tube connecting the eye, nostrils and mouth. So vaccines can be given through mouth and eyes. Do not administer through nostrils! Nostril(Nose) is for air passage only.

       Do not reuse the left out vaccine. After giving the vaccines let the chicks drink some fresh water with milk or glucose. 

        That's it.

How to brood chickens

        Brooding is not a great science. Chicks have to get warmth when they are away from mother hen. Just go to local electrical hardware store, buy good wire, bulb holder, switch plug, 100 watts bulb. Assemble them. You are done. Plug the wire, adjust the height so that the chicks don't huddle together nor they should move far off from the bulb's heat. I maintain temperature above 80 deg F. That's it.
